Modern Romance

June 19, 2014 // Hannah + Kip

Alpine’s Hannah Maines first crossed paths with Kip Hacking in the elevator of their apartment complex the day she moved in. He offered to help her with the move and she politely declined. “I had to play it cool, of course,” Hannah says. They went on their first date to Slab Pizza and started dating. Eventually, Kip proposed at a Midway cabin with rose petals, a roaring fireplace and dozens of photos hung on a clothesline. “He got down on one knee and the rest is a blur because I was so ecstatic!” Hannah says. When it came time to plan the wedding, Hannah went with her instincts — and they proved as elegant as ever. “If I didn’t absolutely love it, I wouldn’t choose it,” Hannah says. “I wanted every detail of the wedding to be authentic to us as a couple. I reminded myself that the actual wedding was the most important part of the day, and everything else would fall into place.”

May 2, 2015 // Chelsi + Craig

We’re going to the Tinder, and we’re going to get married. Just ask Chelsi Richards and Craig Peterson. “We Tindered to the temple, as our friends would say!” laughs Chelsi, who grew up in Pleasant Grove. Their modern meeting ultimately led to a good old fashioned romance — and one perfect proposal. “He told me we were going to Sundance for his brother’s birthday dinner,” she says. “When we got there, his dad led us to a patio in the back. It was lit up, and both of our families were holding ‘will you marry me?’ signs. When I turned back around to look at him, he was down on one knee!” Her yes, of course, was a no-brainer. For wedding planning, Chelsi picked her top three priorities to keep from getting overwhelmed. “My dress, my flowers, and my photographer!” she says. And her colors? “Marsala, blush pink, gold and cream. I loved the way Marsala made everything look classy. Right after I chose it, I found out Marsala was Pantone’s Color of the Year. Even better!” When the wedding day arrived, magic was in the air. “We somehow managed to pick the only Saturday in May that did not rain!” Chelsi says. “Our wedding day was absolutely perfect. Having all of our loved ones and friends there to celebrate with us was the icing on the cake.”

Date With Fate

March 20, 2015 // Brittany + Joram

Brittany Molina and Joram Jensen had a date with fate. The Oregon girl met the Pleasant Grove boy at the University of Utah. She thought he had a deep voice. He thought she was smart. And they were inseparable ever since. When Brittany moved to San Francisco to work for Ernst and Young, Joram followed — and fell to one knee. “He sent me a note that said, ‘You’ve shown you’ll do anything to be together … time to prove it one more time … come find.’ He made me find him, and it took me to downtown San Francisco where he was waiting for me at the Palace of Fine Arts. He said all of this cutesy stuff and asked me to marry him. I dove into his face for a kiss!” Planning a Utah Valley wedding from afar came with challenges, but Brittany was calm (“I wasn’t much of a bridezilla”) and her soon-to-be mother-in-law was a wedding planning dream. Brittany focused in on photography. “I’m obsessed with pictures. I stalked Instagram for three months, and then I found Tyler Rye and was like, YEAH.” She bought her dress on Black Friday. “The best Black Friday purchase I’ve ever made!” And they got married on the most destined of dates. “When I found out Joram’s parents’ wedding anniversary was on a Friday, we knew it had to be that day. They are the best examples of what an incredible marriage is, so it was so cool to make the same promises and covenants they made exactly 29 years earlier.” Every day since that beautiful date has been some kind of wonderful. “Everyone says, I can’t believe it’s already been three months! But for me, I feel like I’ve known him forever. And I know I have. My soul definitely already knew his.”

May 17, 2014 // Britney + Scott

Britney Watts and Scott Anderson’s love came all in good time. The pair knew each other for years, but later reconnected at a party. They talked business — and then mixed in a little pleasure. “We set up a meeting — I didn’t realize how good looking he was until that meeting!” Britney says. “We ended up not talking about business at all. We just talked about life.” Since then, life has been grand. The cute couple hosted their spring nuptials at the beautiful Grand America — complete with a dream dress, powerful petals, and a sparkler sendoff.

Flashback Friday: Rachel + Drew

0
0

FROM THE EDITOR It’s Rachel and Drew Parcell’s 5th wedding anniversary today, and in honor of our 2011 cover couple, we thought it would be fun to take a stroll down gorgeous wedding memory lane. Read the story we originally published below, and then scroll through the impeccable images by Rebekah Westover. Five years later, and their wedding is still a jaw-dropper. Happy Anniversary, Rach and Drew!

August 28, 2010 // Rachel Skalla + Drew Parcell

When it comes to the courtship of Rachel Skalla and Drew Parcell, here’s the tall and short of it:

He’s 6’5”. She’s travel size.

He noticed her (and noticed her, and noticed her). She was too nervous to talk to him.

He asked her out. She was dating someone else.

He waited. She thought about him — a lot.

She asked him out. He was game.

He told her he loved her. She loved him back.

He took a hike … to propose. And on top of Squaw Peak in piles of snow, she totally said yes.

“At first I thought he was joking because he had done that to me before,” Rachel says. “Plus, I didn’t think he had the ring yet, and he was acting really nonchalant the whole day. But all of a sudden he was on one knee, telling me he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me.”

In short (and sweet), Rachel got the picture — and perfect came tumbling after. With the wedding date set for Aug. 28, 2010, Rachel got her planning on, and adored every moment of it.

From her Alta Moda Bridal gown (“I knew it was my dress the second I put it on”) to the catering (“My wedding wouldn’t have been my wedding without Mary Crafts”) to the hair (“I wanted something different, and Darcy at Suggestions was incredible”) to the photography (“I love Rebekah Westover”), Rachel’s unforgettable wedding fell into place — detail after decadent detail.

Among Rachel’s favorites was her peony-laden cascade bouquet, the idea of which came to her when looking at her mother’s wedding.

“I’m obsessed with peonies,” Rachel says. “And when I saw that my mom had a cascade bouquet, I knew we could do something cool with it.”

But even amidst the vintage parasols, five-tiered cake, and sigh-worthy reception (oh, how we editors have been sighing), Rachel was surprised to discover which wedding day memory stole her heart.

“I thought the reception would be my favorite,” she says. “But the temple was the most amazing part. If I could go back to our wedding, I’d go back to the sealing. To walk in with Drew, who I love so much, and see everyone who loves us sitting there? I’ll never forget it.”

July 26, 2014 // Sloane + Chase

For Provo’s Sloane MacCabe, it was all about the Chase. “I was so intimidated by his looks and was too scared to talk to him,” she says. And for Chase Crane, the feeling was mutual. “She was stunning and gorgeous,” he says. “The type of girl you only come across once in a blue moon.” The lovestruck lovebirds started dating in 2009, and a few weeks later vacationed together in New York City. Four years later? They were back in New York City for a life-changing weekend. “We were on a cute tree-lined street and no one else was around,” Sloane says. “We had been in NYC for three days already, and he had been carrying the ring around in his pocket everyday waiting for the right time.” The right time came — and so did the right answer. And then came the wedding planning! It was fun — and stressful. “I planned every detail on my own,” she says. “My wedding was something I dreamed of since I was a little girl, and I wanted to make sure it looked just as I had imagined.” And from the dreamy dress (those sleeves — seriously!) to the sparkle-lit farm tables to the delicious BBQ, every detail of their “summer mountain” wedding was decked with beauty and love. The only detail Sloane forgot? Chase’s ring! “I got to the altar and realized I didn’t have HIS ring! (I actually thought he had it in his own pocket.) I announced to the crowd that I had left his ring in the cabin and it caused quite the chuckle. His friend who was sitting on the front row took his own ring off and passed it up for us to use for the ceremony. Whew! We still laugh about that to this today.” In the end? Love always rings true.

Sweet Hearts

Emilie + Tyler // Nov. 20, 2014

Emilie Woodhead and Tyler Headlee are the sweetest of sweethearts. They grew up three minutes away from each other — but didn’t meet until their senior year of high school. And after a (real) high school musical, a year of college and a two-year LDS mission, they became sweethearts for life. “He proposed by driving around in circles telling me about how we met — what he first thought of me and what he loved about me. Then we went to the restaurant where we had our first date. He proposed to me there, and they brought us free gelato to celebrate!” The celebrations continued with wedding planning. Emilie picked her theme. “Elegant bohemian. I wanted the vibe to be very free-spirited but have a beautiful, classic elegance to it as well.” She picked her photographer — and was extra picky because she is a photographer herself. “I knew right away who I wanted. Kristina Curtis captures everything with so much beauty and honesty. I can’t thank her enough for the beautiful moments she captured.” She picked her petals. “Nicole from Soil & Stem is incredible. Her designs are organic, flowy and stunning.” She picked her venue. “I chose Wadley Farms because I love the European feeling you get when you’re there.” She picked her dress. “I fell in love. The seamstress and I came up with a design together for the sleeves, and she created it from scratch. The design is one of a kind.” And she printed her photos for the reception. “I won’t print with anyone but Pro Digital Photos. They are my favorite.” In the end, the day was too short and too sweet. “It was the best day of my life,” Emilie says. “It was fun and enchanting. It was sunshine and happiness. I could relive that day over and over.”

Brelynn + Jacob Barton // May 9, 2015

Jacob Barton is going to love Brelynn — come rain or come shine. Scroll through this charming wedding at The Bungalow, which is dripping with beautiful details.

And as an extra treat, we’ve included the lyrics to the song Jacob wrote — and played! — for Brelynn at their wedding. Talk about a high note.

“There’s something bout those big green eyes,
I’m oh so glad we left that disco night
We spilled our minds out on the swings
I never thought that would change everything

But our hair was more comparable then,
And our favorite words were “if we’re gonna be best friends”
I love you now as I did then.

With her smile she spins me round
Her perfect laugh, it is the perfect sound
And she means everything to me,
I love to think about what all we will be

It seems that fate has been our friend,
Though we’ve left we’ve always come back again,
She truly is my best friend.

The preacher shouts fear,
The general says be brave,
It’s hard to know how to feel these days
But I know I’m happiest when I’m with you,
Brelynn, my darlin I love you. “

Our Kind of Town

JANUARY 3, 2015 // JANA + MATT

Provo is their kind of town. So when Jana Crandall and Matt Serrao tied the knot, they celebrated with the most neighborly of nuptials (plus some bridals in Central Park, obviously).

Read the bride and groom’s fun story below — and see how they celebrated their love by celebrating the town they fell in love in. Then scroll down to see their vivacious vendors!

THE MEETING “We had been set up on a blind date by his sister, Melanie. We walked down University Avenue to grab lunch at a Thai restaurant, but it turned out to be closed. I think Matt was a little embarrassed, but I didn’t mind. I enjoyed his company and I liked the walk. He instead took me to get brunch at Communal. After eating that delicious meal, I’m glad Thai food was closed! We sat at a little table for two against a window and talked and ate for hours. The exciting thing about meeting Matt was that we both knew a lot of the same people. I grew up in the military and spent my life living all over. When I was a junior in high school, we moved to Honolulu and ended up attending church in the same building Matt grew up attending. When I had lived in Hawaii, our paths never crossed, but they came very close. So close I had even met his parents and been in their home on a few occasions. (Their puppy even ate my shoe!) Matt is five years older than me, so at the time I was living in Hawaii, he was already living in Provo and attending BYU. During our first date, we talked a lot about Hawaii and about all the people we both coincidentally knew. It was amazing to us that our paths could have crossed 10 years ago, but they never did.

THE COURTSHIP We spent the entire summer going to different events around Utah Valley. We went to the rooftop concerts, saw plays and movies at Scera Shell, went on bike rides up Provo Canyon, paddle boarded on Utah Lake, and ate a lot of Shave Ice. We ate at Pizzeria 712, Guru’s Cafe, Thai Drift, J Dawgs and Streetcar 22, just to name a few. Matt works in Downtown Provo and I lived close by, so we’d often walk to Sodalicious together and grab some cool drinks and talk. By the time fall drew around, we were in love and he proposed.

THE LOCALE We had a difficult time deciding where we were going to get married. My family is now settled in the Hudson River Valley in New York (thus the dreamy Central Park bridals) and his family is still in Hawaii. So we settled on what we thought was a great compromise: Utah. We decided to marry in the Salt Lake Temple, but we fell in love in Provo and wanted to share that with our friends and family. We wanted to pull elements from our dating life into our wedding celebration.

THE PROVO PERKS To add to our “Provo filled reception,” we had the Provo Bakery make a spice cake as our wedding cake, and Matt convinced Sodalicious to cater our wedding drinks. Garrett made a custom soda bar, and the ladies from Sodalicious served mixed sodas and hot cocoas to guests sitting at the bar. We hired Marvellous Catering to fill our guests’ bellies with delicious sliders and salad, and the Rob Bennion Band sang and played music throughout the night. Garrett and his team from Mood Events filled the ballroom with special touches and made everything come together with lots of warm florals, lounge areas, and marquee signs. The most important part to me was the Pie Bar. I wanted to add a homemade touch to the night. I’m not actually a cake eater (although Matt very much is!) and I wanted to have a place completely filled with my favorite dessert: pie. My mother, aunts, and sister baked up 22 homemade pies, and friends contributed another 10. It was perfectly filled with pumpkin, cherry, peach, and cream pies. If I didn’t have to spend the evening dancing and greeting guests, I could have easily spent all my time trying the different pies.

THE END The reception was beautiful and perfectly reflected our dating life and our love for food, friends, and family. We had a garter and bouquet dance off. We put $50 dollars in the garter and $50 in the bouquet and had couples compete in a dance contest for the prizes. The Bride and Groom were the judges and tapped people off the dance floor. The winners of the dance-off are actually now engaged to be married!
